Jeanette Spicer Visual Artist and Editorial Photographer

Mom and Sara, 2023

Jeanette Spicer is a Visual Artist and Editorial Photographer whose work has been featured in the New York Times, New York Magazine, and the New Yorker.

Jeanette Spicer creates performative videos, works with photography and with mixed media. Her work is deeply collaborative and concerned with the lack of lesbian representation, what the lesbian gaze is and how the female body can be reimagined and reclaimed.

Spicer received her MFA from Parsons The New School in 2013 and has been awarded a number of residencies including Vermont Studio Center, The Wassaic Project, and Benaco Arte in Italy, among others. Spicer’s first monograph, “Sea(see)” was published in 2018 by Kris Graves Projects. She has shown her work globally, and has had her photographs published in the New York Times, New York Magazine, New Yorker, and Dazed Magazine. Spicer is a co-editor of a dyke publication, WMN, showcasing marginalized communities of lesbian’s art and poetry.

She has worked as the Education Manager at Magnum Photos, where she led workshops with renowned photographers such as Antoine d’Agata and moderated a talk at Aperture Foundation with Bieke Depoorter and Susan Meiselas.  Spicer has taught at a number of Art Institutions such as The School of Visual Art, The International Center of Photography and at colleges such as Pratt, The College of Staten Island and The College of New Jersey.
